Edna is what is known as a seraph, which is essentially a spiritual being that have close ties to elements. Edna's associated element is earth; as such, she lives on a mountain known as Rayfalke Spiritcrest, with her brother, Eizen. Seraphim do not share any sort of blood relation; however, they were both born at the same time on something called an earthpulse point, and could "feel" that they were related in their own way. (An earthpulse is essentially a manifestation of the Earth's power; earthpulse points are concentrated areas of these earthpulses, as earthpulses branch out.)

Edna and Eizen lived together on Rayfalke Spiritcrest for many, many years, and were always plagued by Eizen's curse dubbed "The Reaper's Curse." His curse meant that misfortunes of all kinds would befall himself and those around him. Eizen would eventually depart from the mountaintops to live the rest of his days as a pirate; however, this decision left Edna in a state of bitter heartbreak. Only able to communicate with her brother via letter, Edna was left on Rayfalke Spiritcrest by herself for many more years.

One day, the letters would stop coming; and when a dragon appeared on Rayfalke, Edna knew it was her brother.

When a spirit is in enough contact with enough corruption, they will transform into a dragon, eating humans and creating a giant field of corruption around themselves. Corruption is either generated by humans and their mental and emotional states, or by hellions -- monsters that are humans after being exposed to too much corruption, typically despair, rage or grief. Corruption is incredibly poisonous to seraphim, and thus causes them to turn into powerful beings such as dragons.

In order to keep her brother tied to the mountain, preventing him from eating any more humans, hellions or seraphim, Edna took a pact. All seraphim can choose to take a pact of any sort, but they must sacrifice something and must never speak of what their pact is.

In the world of Zestiria, a Shepherd is a human who has made a contract -- not the exact same as a seraphim's pact -- with a seraph that channels a being called Maotelus' power in order to purify hellions as opposed to killing them. The ultimate goal for the Shepherd is to defeat something called the Lord of Calamity, which is basically a powerful hellion that has retained their human state to some degree. Sorey, a young and brand new Shepherd, is contracted with Lailah, a fire seraph. Sorey promises to help Edna find a way to save Eizen, and so Edna joins him on his travels through two wars, Zelda-esque temple trials, and eventually defeating the Lord of Calamity, a sort of harbinger of doom in the world of Zestiria.

Before the Lord of Calamity is defeated, however, it comes to light that the only way to free Eizen is to lay him to rest for eternity. It is a difficult decision for her with no easy way out -- continue living with the constant reminder that your brother is now gone and a monster has taken his place, or finally let go and learn to grieve properly? It is not easy for her to make this choice, even if she knows what is right, and has known what is for a very long time. Perhaps the only reason she was able to make the final push to accept the reality that her brother is gone, however, is because she accepted the help from Sorey and the other seraphim. She had the courage to be vulnerable and accept help -- and for that, Edna is as strong as the earth itself.

Personality:
On the surface, Edna is apathetic, harsh and heavily sarcastic. It's safe to say she's always been this way, even when her brother was alive, but the literal hundreds of years spent in solitude didn't help her lack of social skill in the least. Right off the bat, she expresses her intense dislike and distrust of humans, which stems from one definitive source: Corruption. She heavily resents humans for being the source of corruption and, albeit unintentionally, mothering the Lord of Calamity. Most of all, she blames them for taking her brother from her -- her brother, Eizen, who wanted nothing more than to be with humans, and in the end, made the ultimate sacrifice for humans.

Edna is prone to getting annoyed easily, whacking people (mostly men) with her umbrella when they do or say something that doesn't agree with her. More commonly, though, and not even just for the sake of being annoyed, Edna loves to mess with people, regardless of gender. She senses how gullible Alisha is almost right away and takes advantage of it; she messes with Rose by whispering in her ear that they, the seraphim that Rose cannot yet see, are ghosts; and she even comes up with a mountain of butt jokes in a certain skit. To top it off, she's also very deadpan, adding a certain and special Edna brand humour to everything she says.

To say she doesn't care about anything and just wants to make fun of people wouldn't be true to her character, though. Edna went so far as to build a shrine on Rayfalke Spiritcrest for humans who were slayed by her draconic brother's hand. When Sorey and the gang came onto Rayfalke, she basically told them to get the hell off the mountain before they were eaten alive; and whenever the party does something dumb, she definitely lets them know it.

Even if Edna never shakes herself of the apathetic tone, sarcasm and teasing, her journeys with the Shepherd do her very well. When her brother was with her, it was just the two of them, and she was always under his protection. After he left Rayfalke Spiritcrest, she never ventured out into the world, staying on the mountain. She learned how to interact with people in her own way, and realized just how much humans are suffering due to corruption. If not for the Shepherd Sorey, Edna likely would have remained on that mountain for the rest of her days, never learning what the outside world was really like.

This is not to say she is not smart. As a seraph, she's well educated in her own kind, and is even older than the knowledgeable mom friend of the group, Lailah, and is therefore able to impart even more knowledge than Lailah is. In many ways, Edna rapidly matured and developed a strong sense of independence thanks to Sorey and company. She doesn't like being treated like a child, even though Eizen often treated her as one. Now that she is shed of her pact to keep Eizen tied down to Rayfalke Spiritcrest, Edna feels that she is finally able to live her life freely.

Abilities & Skills:
As a seraph, a type of spiritual being, Edna possesses certain unique abilities. All seraphim are attuned to one element out of four: Earth, wind, fire, and water. Edna is attuned to the earth element. Somewhat similar to the Fire Emblem weapon triangle, all four elements have their own weakness and strength. Seraphim typically take on a weapon attuned to the element they're weak to, which for Edna is water, hence the umbrella. For any other person, the umbrella might not prove the most effective weapon, but Edna has strength not typical of her physique.

Edna is able to cast various spells, called artes, as listed here. The overall theme for her artes is the manipulation of rocks and the ground to provide offense, defense and healing alike. She is able to use an ability called Giant's Strength, which allows her to channel an immense amount of strength and break boulders. However, this ability takes a toll on her and makes her sore afterwords, and is not able to use it consecutively (unless pushing herself) due to this effect.

Inventory/Companions:
  • Umbrella
  • Attached to her umbrella is a Normin named Phoenix, but he doesn't really do anything
  • Brother's boots and glove

Choice: Witch
Reason: As a seraph, Edna has access to various spells of the earth element, including two healing spells. A good chunk of her training was from her brother, Eizen, and she studied rigorously over the years to become as adept as she is with her artes. Edna would be simultaneously most comfortable with witch and also very frustrated -- she gets dumped in this place and has to learn a whole new type of magic -- but ultimately would be determined and adept in her studies and spells.
